Fetal Lacerations During C-Sections Are Avoidable Medical Errors

Posted by Jared Green on February 25, 2013

Fetal injuries such as lacerations are avoidable yet all too common birth injury errors that often occur because the surgeon is inexperienced or mistakes are made during C-section procedures.

Hospitals normally have established safety protocols to prevent such birth injuries such as removing abdominal wall retractors before delivery; prior to incision, moving the uterine wall away from the baby; and using blunt instruments. Hospitals may have a checklist for doctors to ensure they take all the necessary precautions to prevent lacerations from happening.

Birth injury lacerations can be severe and cause permanent scarring and injury.
