Increase in Health Care Accessibility May Lead to More Medical Errors

Posted by Jared Green on July 16, 2012

The recent US Supreme Court decision upholding the Affordable Care Act may lead to increased incidents of medical errors.  A healthcare system that is already fraught with medical errors and mistakes may lead to further vulnerabilities if the industry does not take the required steps now to prepare for the impending onslaught of new patients who'll be able to access healthcare under the new law.

Of course, the argument may be made that those who will now be able to access quality, affordable healthcare in a doctor's office and avoid treatment in an emergency room setting may actually reduce the incidents of medical errors.

What we do know is that the US healthcare system has not dealt adequately with medical errors and mistakes that now occur.  More patients will only exacerbate this situation, unless a comprehensive system is implemented that deals with these errors.
