A birth injury medical malpractice trial has resulted in the largest ever jury award of $17.8 million to a Colorado family.

According to Colorado Public Radio, the case stems from a surgery performed in 2008 on then-four-day-old Naomi Pressey. The lawsuit alleged that before her surgery, hospital staff gave her the wrong dose of her medication and Pressey went into cardiac arrest.  On Feb. 10, 2008, Naomi went into surgery to attempt to repair her heart defect. During surgery, Naomi went into cardiac arrest a second time and had to be resuscitated.

Now 7 years old, Naomi suffers from cognitive, intellual and motor skill impairments. She will require round-the-clock care and supervision for the rest of her life.
