Medical Errors Cost 10 Hospitals $625,000

Posted by Eva Bleich on June 07, 2013

The California Department of Health has fined ten hospitals for medical errors that placed patients in jeopardy.  The fines and the public disclosure are a result of a new law that was passed in 2009.

The latest report lists the medical errors as five patients had to undergo repeat surgeries to retrieve forgotten surgical items such as a sponge, a retractor, and a clamp; two patients died after falls; and three patients suffered harm because of medication errors.

In making the announcement, health officials note that the goal is future prevention of such medical errors through transparency and an honest analysis of what caused these errors to occur.
