Surgical error deaths closely follow heart attacks and cancer as the leading cause of death in the United States. Such serious medical mistakes during surgery may include wrong surgery, wrong site surgery, foreign object left behind, and operating on the wrong patient.
A study examined the number of surgical mistakes that happened from 1990 to 2010, and they found that 9,744 malpractice payments were tied to very serious surgical errors.
