When a Broken Ankle Turns into Amputation-Jury Award $9.1 Million

A former Tonawanda NY dispatcher has been awarded a $9.1 million verdict in a medical malpractice case that began with a broken ankle but spiraled into a leg amputation.

The State Supreme Court jury awarded $2 million to Donald R. Schultz for past pain and suffering, $4 million for future pain and suffering and $2.8 million for past and future medical expenses and loss of wages. The jury also awarded his former wife $350,000 for loss of services.

The bizarre and tragic case began when Schultz sought treatment in 2004 for a broken ankle.  Twelve surgeries later, his leg had been completely amputated.
